Wellington County's Storied Past
Much of the county's first non-aboriginal settlers were fugitive American black slaves. In Fergus, land was granted to Richard Pierpoint and half a dozen other former slaves. This would grow to be known as the Pierpoint Settlement. Throughout Wellington County's historical story, European settlers came to work and populate the land.
