The Junction & Sunny Acres – Guelph’s Neighbourhoods

The Junction & Sunny Acres may be one of Guelph’s smaller neighbourhoods, but it is not one to be missed. Stepping just outside of Downtown, this area is ripe with history around every corner. With roots to Guelph’s railway system, this neighbourhood is a throwback to an era of industry and innovation.

GCVI

Starting at Guelph Collegiate and Vocational Institute (GCVI), there are a number historical connections on the grounds of this school. Founded by John Galt in 1854, it is the oldest high school in Guelph and third oldest in Ontario. Famed “In Flanders Fields” poet and doctor, John McCrae, is one of the school’s accomplished alumni.

On the school grounds, you’ll also be greeted by a statue of Johnny Barnes, the famed Bermudan known as ‘Mr. Happy’. His statue welcomes passers-by with open arms and a warm smile that immediately makes you feel at home.

GBHS

Heritage Hall is home to the Guelph Black Heritage Society and an integral part of our city’s history. Previously known as the Guelph British Methodist Episcopal Church, the building was erected in 1880 by formerly enslaved Black individuals and their descendants who arrived in the area via the Underground Railroad. The Guelph Black Heritage Society continues to preserve the historical significance of the building and offer a cultural, historical and social centre.

All Aboard

The Junction is nick-named after the Guelph Junction Railway which oversees the tracks that meet up as a thoroughfare through Guelph. The tracks were put down in the early 1870s as part of the Great Western Railway and trains still make their way through this area.

Who doesn’t love a niche museum? They make great memories and stories to share with friends. The Guelph Miniature Railway Museum immerses you into enjoying the small things in life. The Guelph Model Railroad Society has set up a world that harkens back to the era of the steam engine and the CN rail. The Junction is the perfect backdrop for such a place.

A great photo-op is with the Blossom Junction train. In the summer months this happy-go-lucky floral train blooms with over 3000 plants to create the joyful look.

Craft Beer and Pizza Pairing

The newest attraction in the Junction is the two-for-one spot of Fixed Geary Brewing Co. and Canteen Pizza. This brewery and pizza spot have fully embraced the industrial roots of the area as a prime spot to stop for a brew and a slice.
