Guelph and surrounding area is home to some top-notch entertainment, from the illustrious Drayton Entertainment Festival to our city’s very own River Run Centre. But it’s the hidden gems that really bring out Guelph’s flare for theatrics. Don’t take our word for it, we asked our friends at some of our favourite performance spots what makes their shows perfect for a date night.

Guelph Little Theatre

There’s a reason Guelph Little Theatre has been entertaining audiences since 1935. Bringing quality, live theatre with a breadth of plays and musicals to its intimate space, Guelph Little Theatre thrives in making the written word come alive on stage.

Extend the experience beyond the performance by attending an Opening Night Gala for any one of the theatre’s 5 mainstage season productions. Mingle with playwrights and join in on the conversation with the cast and crew after the show.

As well as the main auditorium, there is the ‘Corner Stage’ which offers intimate lobby gatherings that include music night and special events throughout the year.

If a late night isn’t for you, make it to a matinee and enjoy a cool bevvy sponsored by Royal City Brewing at the theatre after the show.

Upcoming production: Hailed as the greatest love story of all time, Romeo and Juliet comes to Guelph Little Theatre this spring.

The Making-Box

Laughter is a shared experience that creates strong bonds. When you laugh with someone else, you immediately become closer to them. That’s why comedy is the perfect idea for a date night.

The Making-Box comedy shows are intimate, fun, and weird, in the best possible way. With professional improv shows or stand-up comedy shows every Friday night, our comic friends have told us we have some of the best audiences in the country. That means there’s always a chance to impress a date with a new comedy experience you can’t get anywhere else.

If you really want to level up your connection, we would suggest taking an improv drop-in class together. Not only do you have the most fun, but you’ll find ways to open up, listen, communicate, and become more vulnerable and closer. In fact, for these reasons, it’s not uncommon for improvisers to fall in love with each other. It happens all the time here, as we explain in the blog post Why Improvisers Fall in Love with Each Other.

Those who laugh together, stay together. And we’re always happy to help with that.

The Downtown Theatre Project

Big performances, small spaces. Imagine watching live theatre where you’re only a few feet away from the performers.

People who’ve attended our shows have said they feel like they aren’t watching a performance, but that they’re a part of it – sitting in the same living room as the actors. Tickets to The Downtown Theatre Project’s shows are unlike any other local theatre experience. From the moment you step into the intimate space, you know you are in for something new.

Founded by four theatre junkies who decided to expand their fix outside of the traditional theatrical experiences and into The Making-Box (yes, the comedy club you just read about), produce sometimes funny, sometimes dramatic, always edgy and modern shows. It’s the kind of theatre you will be talking about weeks later. Want to impress your date with something different? Then this is definitely for you.

Upcoming production: Experience a tasty recipe of hysterical laughs, sexual innuendoes, unsuccessful repressions, and delicious discoveries in 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche.
